Which edition is right for you?

Choose your Windows Server 2025 edition here: Standard or Datacenter - each sold and priced on its own listing below.

Standard fits a single server or light virtualization (1–2 VMs) with the newest hotpatching and GPU partitioning support, including a small business adding a handful of CALs, since Microsoft hasn't carried the Essentials edition into 2025. Datacenter fits hosts running many VMs, Storage Spaces Direct deployments, or clustered GPU workloads. Budget-conscious small setups that specifically need the Essentials licensing model can still choose 2022 Essentials instead.

Description

Windows Server 2025 is available in two editions: Standard and Datacenter. Each is sold as a separate listing below. Add the one you need directly to your cart, or open its listing for full details, specifications and FAQ.

Which Windows Server 2025 edition fits your setup

Both editions run the same operating system. The difference is how many virtual machines the license covers and which storage and virtualization features come with it. Windows Server 2025 Essentials is not offered in our store.

  • Windows Server 2025 Standard suits physical servers and lightly virtualized environments. A fully licensed host can run two virtual machines, plus unlimited Windows Server containers (Hyper-V isolated containers are limited to two).
  • Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is built for dense virtualization and private cloud. It covers an unlimited number of virtual machines on a fully licensed host and adds Storage Spaces Direct and unrestricted Storage Replica. Standard includes Storage Replica with limits, and does not include Storage Spaces Direct.

Our Standard vs Datacenter comparison is written for Windows Server 2022, and the two editions differ in the same way in 2025. If a small organization wants the included-access model of Essentials, Windows Server 2022 Essentials is also available, and the 2022 range lists every edition.

How Windows Server 2025 licensing works

Both editions are licensed per physical core. Every physical processor needs at least 8 core licenses, and every server needs at least 16 in total. All physical cores on the host must be licensed, whether or not you use them for virtual machines. The number of cores covered by each listing is shown on its own edition page.

Both editions also require Client Access Licenses (CALs) for the users or devices that connect to the server. See Windows Server CALs, or read how to choose between User CALs and Device CALs.

Choosing by workload

A file server, a domain controller or a single application server usually fits Standard. A host that will run many virtual machines, or that needs hyper-converged storage, is better served by Datacenter, because the license covers every virtual machine on the host and the cost per virtual machine falls as you add more.

Platforms and requirements

Windows Server 2025 runs on 64-bit hardware only. You can install it on a physical server or inside a virtual machine, including on Hyper-V. Each edition page lists the minimum processor, memory and storage requirements. Windows Server 2025 receives extended support from Microsoft until 10 October 2034.

Delivery and activation

Your product key is delivered by email, typically within minutes of payment confirmation. Install Windows Server 2025 from Microsoft installation media, then enter the product key during setup or afterwards in the activation settings. Activation is performed online with the key, during or after installation.

This is a one-time purchase for the license: there is no subscription attached to the key.

Frequently asked questions

Why only two editions here, not three?

Microsoft hasn't released a 2025 Essentials edition. For new small-business infrastructure, Standard plus a few CALs is the direct equivalent going forward.

What's the right choice for a small business buying new today?

Usually Standard with CALs for the number of users or devices you have. 2022 Essentials remains an option if the included-CALs model and its 25 user / 50 device cap matter more to you than being on the newest version.

How do I choose between Standard and Datacenter?

VM count is the deciding factor: Standard covers up to two on a fully licensed host, Datacenter is unlimited.

Can I buy directly from this page?

Yes, set a quantity next to the edition you want and add it to cart.

Do I need CALs?

Yes, for both editions: see Windows Server CALs.
