SQL Server: Standard vs Enterprise
Standard and Enterprise run the same core database engine. What separates them is a hard compute ceiling and a handful of advanced features Standard doesn’t include.
- Standard — capped at the lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores per instance, and 128 GB of Database Engine memory. Fits most single-server and departmental workloads comfortably.
- Enterprise — no core cap, no memory cap beyond the operating system’s own maximum, plus advanced high-availability, analytics, and machine-learning features Standard doesn’t have.

Two licensing models
Standard can be licensed either per-core or under Server + CAL (a server license plus a Client Access License for each connecting user or device) — both valid, and which one costs less depends on your core count versus your user count. Enterprise is per-core only; Server + CAL isn’t offered for new Enterprise purchases.

- SQL Server 2012 — extended support ended July 2022. Buy today only to match an existing environment; check current Extended Security Updates availability directly with Microsoft if continued patching matters.
- SQL Server 2016 — extended support ends July 14, 2026, with Extended Security Updates available separately afterward.
- SQL Server 2017 — extended support ends October 2027.
- SQL Server 2019 — extended support ends January 2030, the longest runway in this catalog.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need CALs with a core-based license?
No — core-based licensing is self-contained. CALs only apply if you’re specifically using the Server + CAL model instead.
Can I move from Standard to Enterprise later?
Not as a simple add-on — it’s a full edition upgrade, not extra cores on top of Standard. Size for headroom if you’re already close to Standard’s limits.
