Buying Microsoft server licenses

Ms Server sells perpetual licenses for Microsoft server products: Windows Server from 2008 R2 through 2025, SQL Server, SharePoint Server, and the Client Access Licenses that go with them. Every license is a one-time purchase — no subscription, no renewal, no expiry.

Which Windows Server edition fits your setup

Windows Server is licensed per physical core, with a minimum of 8 cores per processor and 16 per server. Standard allows two virtual machines on a fully licensed host; Datacenter removes that limit and adds Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica and Shielded VMs. Essentials is a different model entirely — licensed per server, capped at 25 users and 50 devices, with access rights included instead of separate CALs.

Client Access Licenses, explained briefly

Outside Essentials, the server license covers the machine, not the people using it. Each user or device connecting to it needs a CAL. User CALs suit teams where people use several devices; Device CALs suit shared workstations used across shifts. Remote Desktop Services requires its own separate RDS CAL on top of the standard one.

Older versions still available

Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2008 R2 have reached end of extended support, but remain in service on isolated systems and legacy applications that can't migrate. Licenses are still available here for those cases. For anything new, 2022 or 2025 is the right starting point.

Delivery and activation

Licenses are delivered by email, usually within minutes of payment confirmation, along with an invoice and activation instructions. Activation is done through Microsoft, online or by phone. If a key fails to activate, contact us and we'll replace it.
