Windows Server 2016 today: who it’s for
Windows Server 2016 is in Extended Support, not Mainstream — Microsoft ships security updates only, no new features, through January 2027. After that, Extended Security Updates remain available separately for a further period. It fits two situations: an existing 2016 environment where the goal is keeping validated software running rather than testing it against a newer version, and small deployments that specifically want the Essentials licensing model.

Mainly for compatibility with an already-running 2016 environment, not for a new deployment — newer versions offer more runway before their own extended-support dates. If you’re buying today for infrastructure you expect to run for years, Windows Server 2022 or 2025 give you more time before facing this same question again.
